Mack Attack Claims Canada Day Special in Estevan

When you hold a Sprint Car race on Canada Day, what would one expect but fireworks? That is exactly what an enthusiastic crowd of race fans got as they were treated to a wild, fast-paced green to checkered flag feature on Saturday night, July 1 at southeastern Saskatchewan's premier dirt track racing facility, Estevan Motor Speedway.

Following a brief tribute to the late Fred Brownfield which was read by track announcer Pat Boyle, 14 NOSA Sprint Cars were pushed off for the feature race of the night. Casey Mack had the pole position but it was his front row partner, Chris Shirek of Thompson, ND who grabbed the early lead, rocketing out of turn one on the first lap. Not to be outdone, Winnipeg's Lou Kennedy Jr passed Mack for the second spot and worked his way up to Shirek and made the pass for the lead.

Just when you thought Kennedy would reclaim his Estevan title, Casey Mack worked his way through lapped traffic closer to Lou Jr until he was able to make a charge and take the lead from Kennedy for good. After taking the checkered flag and running his cool down lap, something went terribly wrong as Casey Mack ended up flipping his #8 sprinter, landing against the fencing on the front stretch under the flag stand.

After the speedway's rescue crew got Mack out of the car, he was escorted to a waiting ambulance. The East Grand Forks, MN native was cleared and was able to compete again on Sunday night at Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota.

410's Even The Score At EMS

Estevan Motor Speedway hosted the Grand Forks-based Northern Outlaw Sprint Association at the Thunder City Fall Classic on Saturday, September 17.

If anyone had any doubt as to who was the best 410 Sprint Car driver in North Dakota right now, the exclamation point was driven home by Grand Forks native Mark Dobmeier. His dominant performance against a modest field of competitors, 12 cars in total, left the speed-hungry crowd of 1,200 satisfied for another season. The track was in mint condition allowing Dobmeier to go just about anywhere on the track, making for a lot of passing during the feature.

Two 360 Sprint teams cashed in on the 360 bonus money offered by Estevan Motor Speedway to any 360 finishing in the top 5 positions in the feature race. Collecting an additional $250 was second place finisher Greg Nikitenko of Minot, ND and fourth place finisher Dave Glennon of Casselton, ND. who was driving the Layton-owned K9 sprinter. This also marks the first time in three races that the "Prairie Dirt Challenge" was not collected by a 360 team.

In the previous two Prairie Dirt organized Sprint Car races, Lou Kennedy Jr of Winnipeg cashed in on the top prizes and with it the "Prairie Dirt Challenge" bonus. To date, Kennedy has won $3000 U.S. from the Challenge series of races. Lou was set to compete at Estevan, however, a blown motor at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND on Friday night prevented the defending series winner from attempting the sweep of these events.

Two For Lou!!!

Before an overflowing grandstand of race fans, Winnipeg's Lou Kennedy Jr captured the inaugural NAPA Auto Parts Mid-Canada Sprint Car Challenge at Victory Lane Speedway, MB. Included in Kennedy's winnings was the $500 bonus money paid for a 360 Sprint to win the NOSA-sanctioned race which made his grand total payday $1500 dollars U.S.

This marks the second consecutive year that Lou has cashed in on the "Prairie Dirt Challenge" as he won the first Challenge race hosted by Estevan Motor Speedway on August 14, 2004.

The 360 sprints swept the event's top three spots and with that, collecting the additional bonus money of $250 paid to any 360 finishing in the top three postions in the feature. The other recipients of the bonus money were the second place car of Wade Nygaard of Fargo, ND and the third place car driven by Dave Sobczak of Winnipeg. The highest finishing 410 sprint was that of Mark Dobmeier of Grand Forks, ND who finished in fourth place.

During the race program an announcement was made that NAPA Auto Parts will once again join with Victory Lane Speeday to host the second annual NAPA Auto Parts Mid-Canada Sprint car Challenge again in July of 2006.

LOU WINS!

Before a packed house at Estevan Motor Speedway, Lou Kennedy Jr of Winnipeg, MB held off hard charges by 410 Outlaw drivers Chris Shirek of Thompson, ND and defending NOSA champion Mark Dobmeier of Grand Forks, ND to bring his Wissota 360 Sprinter to victory lane and take home $1500 first prize money in the Inaugural TS&M NOSA vs Wissota/ASCS 360 Sprint Car Challenge.

As a footnote, the officials of Estevan Motor Speedway were pleased with the turnout and were very appreciative of the efforts of those who helped bring this show to Estevan. When the fans were asked if they wanted to see the sprints return next year, the stands erupted in approval.

Richard Rogers of Winnipeg lost a piston in his heat race and was unable to start the feature.
